A juice fast involves stopping consumption of all solid foods and living solely on water and freshly juiced fruit and vegetable juices. The purpose of a juice fast is to give the body's digestive organs a rest from digesting solid food while nourishing the body with nutrient-dense and highly assimilating juices. The fast may last anywhere from one day to over a month. To succeed on a juice fast and realize health benefits, strictly adhere to guidelines on following as well as breaking the fast. Eliminate drugs and foods that are difficult to digest from your diet a week before you plan on beginning the fast. For this week, avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and animal food products.

Drink a glass of water upon waking every morning while on the juice fast. Do not consume any solid food throughout the entire fast.

Juice a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. You may choose to drink the juices individually or combine to create different flavors. Common combinations include apple and pear, orange and grapefruit, and apple and watermelon. Do not drink bottled juice from a grocery store because it lacks the live enzymes present in fresh juice. Fresh vegetable juices also contain high levels of vitamins and minerals. Spinach, carrots, cucumbers, green peppers and sprouts are great vegetables for juicing.

Drink purified water and juice only throughout the day. Drink between 32 and 64 oz. of juice daily. Drink as much water as you like.

Break the fast by slowly easing into solid food. Start by adding only a few pieces of fresh fruit the first day off the fast. You need to ease your digestive system into digesting solid food again. On the second day off the fast, based on how you are feeling, continue to consume only fruit or add a light vegetable soup. On the third day, consume a light dinner if you feel good throughout the day.
